I guess most of us will have heard that 081 has been sold. Congratulations to Peter Sackett, the new owner. And welcome, Peter, to our club.
Peter and 081 will be seen around for a while, since he arranged flying lessons as part of the purchase package.
In the article on 081 in the RAA magazine, Geoff invited anyone who had association with 081 to add comments to a tribute page. This forum seems as good as place as any.
Like most people I had some hesitation about the article, since it shows 081 as a true workhorse. However, the RAA could hardly have run an anodyne article that was some kind of hackneyed sales pitch.
The article gave us and the plane exposure. Without the article, there would have been no photos.
I also recommend Geoff's book on the RAAF in Russia. Geoff's dad was involved so it is very much a personal story, but it highlights the effects of large battleships such as the Bismarck and the Tirpitz on the strategy of WWII.
It is hard to get, but I have a copy to lend if anyone is interested.
Please add your 081 anecdotes as comments!
